# Offline mode — HUNTERRA

> No signal in the field? The app is ready for it.

HUNTERRA works without a data connection: the grounds and map layers you pick are stored on your phone, tracks and entries are recorded offline and sync by themselves once you are back in coverage. The icon in the top right corner shows the connection state and the progress of the sync, and opens the log and any errors. Ground data sync is currently available on Android.

- **The map and the ground with you** Downloaded map layers, ground boundaries and points of interest. Your position comes from GPS, which needs no data — you know where you stand even with no signal.
- **Nothing you write down is lost** Tracks, harvests and points of interest are created offline and sync themselves into the ground once you are back on signal. Track colours tell individual dogs and their owners apart.
- **You decide what gets downloaded** You mark the grounds and map layers you want offline. The rest is not downloaded and takes no space on the phone.

## How to set it up

Three steps in the app, then you just walk.

1. **You pick the grounds up front** In the list of grounds you mark the ones you want available offline. Their data is downloaded to the phone together with the base map. Grounds you have not marked are not available offline — on purpose, so that nobody expects entries to appear out of nowhere. _(The list of grounds in offline mode: an orange cloud means the data is on the phone.)_
2. **Maps download the same way** Both base and overlay map layers can be downloaded. A fresh install offers three base and two overlay layers, and you can add your own map sources on top of that. _(Map settings: the offline background and the state of each layer.)_
3. **Connection state at a glance** The icon in the top right corner shows whether you are online and how the sync is doing. Tap it and you get the progress, the last successful run and the log. If you assign a seal offline that the manager has meanwhile used for another animal, the sync flags it as an error and shows it here. _(The sync panel with download progress and the time of the last run.)_

Ground data sync is currently available on Android only. The reason is practical: our largest partner, Lesy ČR, runs Android almost everywhere and has been using the app in the field for years. An iOS solution is being prepared on top of what we learn here.
