Hunted game is not just a trophy or game for personal consumption. It is a food of animal origin, which is subject to strict hygiene and veterinary rules. The game inspector (an officially trained person) plays a key role in the whole process. His agenda is not a formality – it is a mandatory step that protects consumers and hunters themselves from health risks.

How to become a viewer

A trained person is a person who has completed specialized training according to European regulations (in particular, Regulation EC No. 853/2004) and has obtained a certificate of competence to examine the bodies of hunted wild game. Training is organized, for example, by veterinary universities, and upon successful completion, the participant receives a certificate, stamp and a trained person’s card.

A trained person receives a card and stamp, which indicate their registration number. And it is by entering the details from the trained person’s card that the whole story of the viewer in the HUNTERRA application begins.

Details of the card can be entered in the user account settings, in the documents section. If all information is entered correctly, from now on the user will be displayed in the list of viewers from which the hunter will be able to choose when requesting a veterinary examination of the caught animal.

How to request an inspection

For each catch that is properly entered in the HUNTERRA application, a button “Send to inspector” appears. Once this button is used, the hunter selects an inspector from the list, the catch is “locked” and cannot be manipulated further until the inspector writes down the inspection result for the piece.

The list of inspectors and the validity of their authorizations is continuously verified against the lists published by the State Veterinary Administration. When selecting an inspector, the hunter can always see whether his authorization is valid.

The inspector’s main duties

The inspector’s main duty is to perform an initial examination of the hunted game as soon as possible after the hunt. He/she checks the overall health of the animal, looking for visible signs of illness, injury or other abnormalities. If the examination reveals a possible health risk, the animal is marked with the text “RISK” on the game origin card and the hunting ground user is obliged to present the game to the official veterinarian.

Records and administrative duties
A trained person is obliged to keep records of:

species and numbers of game caught and examined,
place and time of hunting,
results of the examination,
where the game was delivered.
These records must be kept for at least 2 years and submitted to the state veterinary supervision authorities upon request. The hunting ground user is also obliged to ensure that the inspection is carried out in a timely and proper manner.

Why it matters

A properly managed game inspector’s agenda is not just about compliance with regulations. It is a practical tool for protecting health, transparency and credibility of hunting management. When the entire process is digitalized, the risk of errors decreases, communication with the veterinary administration is accelerated and every member of the hunting ground has a clear overview of what is happening with the game.

Examination for trichinosis

Special attention is paid to game susceptible to trichinosis – especially wild boars. The hunting ground user must ensure laboratory examination for the presence of trichinella. The muscle sample is sent to an accredited laboratory or state veterinary institute and only after a negative result can the game be further handled (including for personal consumption in some cases).

HUNTERRA also significantly simplifies this agenda. A request for examination can be easily generated in the web application, and the result can then be attached directly to the catch.
